About Love Them Longer

Love Them Longer is an educational tool that helps pet owners get a general sense of what emergency veterinary care typically costs. When your pet has an emergency, the last thing you need is financial surprise on top of the stress you're already feeling.

Our cost ranges are aggregated from publicly available veterinary pricing data across the United States, giving you general guidance on what pet owners typically pay so you can focus on what matters most: getting your pet the care they need.

How It Works

1

Select your emergency

Choose from common pet emergencies or describe what happened. We cover dozens of scenarios for both dogs and cats.

2

Add your ZIP for local pricing

Veterinary costs vary significantly by region. Your ZIP code helps us adjust cost ranges to better reflect your local market.

3

See typical costs with financing options

See a typical cost range with a breakdown by category, understand what drives the price, and explore financing options if needed.

Our Data

Love Them Longer is built on published veterinary research, not generated content. Every cost number, breed risk, and nutrition formula on this site traces back to a documented source.

  • Cost ranges are 2025–2026 national averages audited against seven published sources: Pawlicy Advisor, BetterPet, VetCostCalc, ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center, GoodRx Pet, CareCredit, and PetPlace.
  • Breed risk data comes from peer-reviewed veterinary research, including the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) and the Royal Veterinary College's VetCompass program.
  • Nutrition calculations follow NRC 2006 (Nutrient Requirements of Dogs and Cats) — the gold-standard reference used by veterinary nutritionists.
  • Insurance comparisons use objective coverage scoring against published carrier plan terms.

We adjust cost ranges by geographic region using cost-of-living multipliers. Major metro areas like New York, San Francisco, and Los Angeles typically run 20–40% above national averages, while rural areas may be 10–20% below. The ranges also account for pet size (larger animals often require more medication and supplies) and after-hours surcharges, which can add 25–50% to the base cost.

One thing to know about PawFile document uploads: when you upload a vet document (invoice, lab result, vaccination record), we run it through locally-hosted text extraction software to auto-fill fields like medication names, dosages, and dates. Your file is processed on our own servers and never sent to any third-party service. You can review and edit every extracted field before saving.

These are general cost ranges for informational purposes, not quotes or predictions. Every pet, every vet, and every situation is different. Actual costs can fall significantly outside the ranges shown. Always discuss pricing directly with your veterinarian.
