What to Expect at the Vet
Cat abscesses are pockets of infection that form under the skin, most commonly from bite wounds sustained during fights with other cats. They typically appear as painful, swollen lumps that may burst and drain foul-smelling pus. Treatment involves lancing and draining the abscess under sedation, flushing the wound cavity, placing a drain if needed, and prescribing antibiotics and pain medication.
This is classified as a mild emergency. Seek care today.
Note: Outdoor and unneutered male cats are at highest risk for fight-related abscesses. FIV and FeLV testing is standard practice after cat bite wounds, as these viruses are transmitted through saliva. Keeping cats indoors eliminates the primary risk factor. Some abscesses require a Penrose drain for 3-5 days.
Your veterinarian will perform an initial examination ($75-$120) followed by diagnostic tests ($50-$200) to determine the appropriate treatment approach. Treatment costs ($125-$900) vary based on the specific intervention needed. Hospitalization and monitoring ($75-$280) may be required.
