What to Expect at the Vet

Bee and wasp stings are extremely common in dogs, especially curious puppies who snap at buzzing insects. Most stings cause only localized swelling, redness, and mild pain that resolves within a few hours. However, some dogs develop severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis) that can cause facial swelling, difficulty breathing, vomiting, collapse, and even death without emergency treatment. Dogs stung inside the mouth or throat are at higher risk for airway obstruction regardless of allergy status.

This is classified as a mild emergency. Seek care today.

Note: Most bee stings can be managed at home with a cold compress and monitoring. Remove the stinger by scraping (not squeezing) if visible. Benadryl (diphenhydramine) at 1 mg per pound of body weight is a common first-aid measure, but always confirm dosing with your vet. Seek emergency care immediately if your dog has facial swelling, hives, difficulty breathing, vomiting, or weakness — these are signs of anaphylaxis. Multiple stings are also more dangerous and warrant a vet visit.

Your veterinarian will perform an initial examination ($50-$125) followed by diagnostic tests ($0-$200) to determine the appropriate treatment approach. Treatment costs ($25-$750) vary based on the specific intervention needed. Hospitalization and monitoring ($25-$425) may be required.
