What to Expect at the Vet

A limping dog can trigger immediate worry, but in many cases the cause is a minor sprain, a sore paw pad, or muscle stiffness — especially after a long hike or vigorous play. Mild limping that doesn't worsen over 24-48 hours often resolves on its own with rest. However, limping can also indicate more serious conditions like a torn cruciate ligament, fracture, joint infection, or bone cancer, which is why persistent or severe limping should always be evaluated by a vet.

This is classified as a mild emergency. Seek care today.

Note: When to actually worry: If your dog won't put any weight on the limb, the limping gets worse over 24 hours, there's visible swelling or deformity, your dog cries out when the area is touched, or the limping came from a known injury (fall, collision). Non-weight-bearing lameness and sudden onset in large-breed senior dogs warrant prompt evaluation. Mild limping after exercise can be monitored for 24-48 hours with rest.

Your veterinarian will perform an initial examination ($50-$125) followed by diagnostic tests ($25-$500) to determine the appropriate treatment approach. Treatment costs ($25-$550) vary based on the specific intervention needed. Hospitalization and monitoring ($0-$325) may be required.
