What to Expect at the Vet

Pancreatitis — inflammation of the pancreas — is a painful and potentially life-threatening condition in dogs, often triggered by eating fatty foods like table scraps, bacon grease, or raiding the trash. Symptoms include vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain (dog may hunch or assume a 'prayer position'), loss of appetite, and lethargy. Mild cases can be managed with outpatient care, but severe pancreatitis requires hospitalization with IV fluids, pain management, anti-nausea medication, and nutritional support.

This is classified as a severe emergency. Seek care immediately.

Note: Pancreatitis is diagnosed with blood tests (canine pancreatic lipase is the most specific), often combined with abdominal ultrasound. Miniature Schnauzers, Cocker Spaniels, and Yorkshire Terriers are predisposed. The most common trigger is dietary indiscretion — especially fatty human foods. Severe cases can lead to systemic inflammatory response, organ failure, and death. Dogs who recover from pancreatitis typically need a permanent low-fat diet to prevent recurrence. Holiday weekends see a spike in cases due to table scraps.

Your veterinarian will perform an initial examination ($75-$150) followed by diagnostic tests ($150-$600) to determine the appropriate treatment approach. Treatment costs ($200-$2,000) vary based on the specific intervention needed. Hospitalization and monitoring ($375-$2,250) may be required.
