What to Expect at the Vet
Seizures in dogs can be caused by epilepsy, toxin exposure, liver disease, brain tumors, or metabolic disorders. A first-time seizure requires comprehensive diagnostics to identify the underlying cause, including bloodwork, urinalysis, and potentially advanced imaging like MRI. Treatment depends on the cause but may include anti-seizure medications and hospitalization for cluster seizures or status epilepticus.
This is classified as a severe emergency. Seek care immediately.
Note: A single, brief seizure in an otherwise healthy dog may only require bloodwork and monitoring. Cluster seizures or status epilepticus (continuous seizure activity) require immediate IV anti-seizure medication and ICU monitoring. MRI to rule out brain tumor adds $1,500-$3,000 to diagnostics.
Your veterinarian will perform an initial examination ($75-$200) followed by diagnostic tests ($200-$2,000) to determine the appropriate treatment approach. Treatment costs ($100-$600) vary based on the specific intervention needed. Hospitalization and monitoring ($125-$1,500) may be required.
