What to Expect at the Vet

Diarrhea in puppies is incredibly common and is usually caused by the stress of a new home, a diet change, eating something they shouldn't have, or mild intestinal parasites. While it can look alarming, a single bout of soft stool or mild diarrhea in an otherwise energetic, eating puppy is rarely cause for emergency concern. However, puppies dehydrate much faster than adult dogs, so diarrhea that persists beyond 24 hours or is accompanied by other symptoms does warrant a vet visit.

This is classified as a mild emergency. Seek care today.

Note: When to actually worry: If the diarrhea is bloody, lasts more than 24 hours, your puppy is under 12 weeks old, your puppy stops eating or drinking, becomes lethargic, or is vomiting as well. Parvo is a life-threatening concern in unvaccinated or under-vaccinated puppies with bloody diarrhea — seek immediate care in that case. For mild diarrhea in an otherwise happy puppy, withhold food for 12 hours, then feed bland diet (boiled chicken and rice) and monitor.

Your veterinarian will perform an initial examination ($50-$100) followed by diagnostic tests ($25-$250) to determine the appropriate treatment approach. Treatment costs ($25-$250) vary based on the specific intervention needed. Hospitalization and monitoring ($0-$200) may be required.
